Supporting Sleep, the Unsung Pillar of Mental Health: 

An Introduction to Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I)

            Presenter:  Martin Hsia, Psy.D.

It’s no secret to any psychologist or mental health professional that adequate sleep is a cornerstone of how we thrive. Consistent with this awareness is how sleep problems, such as insomnia, can so starkly correlate with every other type of issue our clients may present, from trauma, to depression, to eating disorders, to addictions, and beyond. This brief presentation will share some significant statistics about the relationship between sleep and mental health, common challenges that arise relevant to the psychology of sleep, as well as how to address the most common sleep disorder, insomnia. Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is increasingly supported by research to help individuals across diagnoses and life stages to put insomnia to rest and get themselves to sleep.

Learning Objectives:  After attending event, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the impact of insufficient sleep on mental health. 
  2. List the psychological and behavioral mechanisms that can maintain sleep problems. 
  3. Describe the components of Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I).

Presenter Biography
Dr. Martin Hsia 
practices in the Glendale office of the Clinical Director of the Cognitive Behavior Therapy Center of Southern California (aka CBT SoCal), a group practice specializing in empowering individuals with OCD, Anxiety Disorders, and Insomnia with the support and tools to thrive.Dr. Hsia has been an SGVPA Board member for 8 years, has lectured and supervised as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Fuller Graduate School of Psychology and also hosts the podcast called Psych Rally, which addresses a range of issues related to psychotherapy and mental health.

The California Psychological Association is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. CPA maintains responsibility for this program and its content. CPA co-sponsored credit is also accepted by the Board of Registered Nursing and the Board of Behavioral Sciences for their licenses. Important Notice: Those who attend the workshop and complete the CPA evaluation form will receive 1.5 continuing education credits. Please note that APA CE rules require that we give credit only to those who attend the entire workshop. Those arriving more than 15 minutes after the start time or leaving before the workshop is completed will not receive CE credits.
