Working as a Psychologist: Variety and Self-Design
Over the past few years, SGVPA has established a regular tradition of hosting a non-CE event each December called “Voices of Experience.” These panel discussions aim to shed light on areas of practice in psychology that are familiar, or might be different from what you have envisioned. We especially hope the program will interest early-career psychologists and students by providing a diverse panel of participants who will discuss their unique modes of work and pathways to their current positions.
Brinell Anderson, Psy.D. (panelist) is a licensed psychologist with an academic background in African-American studies as well as Community Psychology. She works half-time in private practice in Pasadena and half-time as a clinical associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry College Mental Health Division treating graduate and medical students on the health science campus of a major university.
David Hindman, Ph.D. (panelist) currently serves as the Director of Clinical Standards & Training (CST) for the Los Angeles County-Substance Abuse, Prevention & Control Unit (SAPC). He is also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine & Science as well as an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the UCLA Geffen School of Medicine.
Laura Ruaro, Psy.D. (panelist) earned her doctorate from London Metropolitan University and is licensed in both California and the United Kingdom. She also completed a Postgraduate Fellowship in psychoanalytic psychotherapy at the Wright Institute, Los Angeles. Dr. Ruaro works at Dr. Paula Bruce & Associates, a group practice in Los Angeles, with adults, couples and families from the psychodynamic perspective and has a special focus in Perinatal Psychology.
Rick Williamson, Ph.D. (panelist) is a licensed psychologist at Emmada Psychology Center, a group practice in Pasadena and West LA. He works primarily dynamically and cognitively, with a focus on culture and faith in his psychotherapy practice. He also conducts psychological testing, organizational consulting, and brings his training in psychopharmacology to his analysis of client experiences. He consults nationally and internationally on stress and trauma with Headington Institute and Dreams Indeed, Inc.
Richard LaBrie, Psy.D. (moderator) is a clinical psychologist in full-time private practice in Pasadena and a some-time Adjunct Professor of Health Psychology at CSPP/Alliant, LA. He works primarily psychodynamically and also utilizes cognitive, systems, and community mental health approaches. He treats trauma, dissociative disorders, depression, anxiety, life transitions, grief and loss, and creative issues. He is the current chair of the SGVPA Education Committee.
