Parenting in the Digital Age: Opportunities and Risks for Intact and Divorced Families
Presenter: Angela Bissada, Psy.D.
Friday, November 9, 2018 Women’s City Club of Pasadena, 160 N Oakland Ave Pasadena, CA 91101 12:00pm – 1:30pm
Digital technologies have become central in young people’s lives, and it is clear that they have become an important social context. Recent research also suggests that new technologies present both risks and opportunities for children’s development and family well-being. With the proliferation of mobile technology, smart phones/devices have become commonplace in homes – very young children use them to play games and apps and older youth use them to connect with friends and even family members. Media such as television have always been important in family systems, and are often a source of family conflict. Digital media are no different, and the smart phone has become a third party in families and often a source of contention and conflict. In this presentation, we will begin by examining what we have learned about youth, parents and families’ use of technology, and the risks and opportunities that they present. We will present case examples to illustrate potential risks and to propose resolutions to problems caused by the excessive use of digital media, differing parent rules/expectations and the use/misuse within the context of divorce and its litigation.
Learning Objectives: After attending event, participants will be able to:
- Identify the most common digital media used by children, co-parents and families.
- Describe the effects of digital media on the social and emotional development of children and adolescents.
- Design strategies to identify and manage common disputes that arise between parents regarding their children’s technology use.
