Outpatient Treatment of Bipolar Disorder in Adults

Presenter:  Keith Valone, Ph.D., Psy.D., M.S.C.P.

The lifetime prevalence of bipolar spectrum disorders is 4.5% in the general population, making bipolar disorder a diagnosis that psychologists encounter frequently in general outpatient practice. However, the treatment of adult bipolar disorder is a specialized practice area requiring competence in a set of integrated skill sets and core competencies. Psychologists who treat adult bipolar patients in their outpatient practices are encouraged to be aware of and develop the necessary skills to provide safe and effective treatment. A model for the outpatient treatment of adult bipolar disorder will be presented that addresses these core areas of knowledge and expertise that psychologists should have when treating adult bipolar patients in outpatient settings:

  • Bipolar disorder as a condition
  • Assessment and diagnosis of bipolar disorder and co-occurring disorders
  • Multidisciplinary collaborative care models
  • Psychopharmacology including medications used to treat bipolar disorder
  • Evidence-based psychotherapies for bipolar disorder
  • Treatment of co-occurring psychological and substance use disorders
  • Assessment and management of crisis situations

Learning Objectives:  After attending event, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe three psychiatric disorders that commonly co-occur with bipolar disorder
  2. Identify major classes of medications used to treat bipolar disorder in the outpatient setting
  3. Describe the three most important evidence-based psychotherapy approaches for treating bipolar disorder
