SGVPA October 2018 CE Luncheon – The Erotic and the Eroticized Transferences: A Contemporary Psychoanalytic Approach – Presenters: Stephanie Law, Psy.D. and Peter Radestock, LL.B., Ph.D., Psy.D.

Women’s City Club of Pasadena, 160 N Oakland Ave  Pasadena, CA 91101

Friday, October 12, 2018

12:00pm – 1:30pm

Erotic transference is, for example, when a patient develops sexual feelings for the therapist as a way of reviving developmentally based longings that had been previously closed own. Eroticized transference is, for example, when archaic needs for mirroring have become eroticized. Patients with this transferential configuration have often been repeatedly rejected and their experience of being admired has become organized around their physical appearance. Participants will learn the difference between the erotic and eroticized transferences and what underlying dynamics contribute to each. The focus will be on learning to define the configurations relationally and to reduce the incidents of shame. Interventions drawn from an Intersubjective Psychoanalytic approach will be elucidated. A case is discussed, which will illustrate these two transference configurations.

Learning Objectives:  After attending event, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the difference between the erotic and eroticized transferences.
  2. Describe the distinction between the repetitive and developmental dimensions in the transference from Intersubjective Systems theory.
  3. Demonstrate how an intersubjective dysjunction can occur within Erotic and Eroticized Transferences.
